MSI Wind U270 Reviews

The 12.1in MSI Wind U270 notebook makes use of AMD's Fusion E-350 accelerated processing unit (APU) to offer better-than-usual all-round performance in a form factor that's not much bigger than a typical netbook. In particular, the Fusion APU gives the U270 better credentials than most netbooks when it comes to multimedia tasks, and you can easily hook it up to TV using HDMI. The other selling point of this laptop is the inclusion of USB 3.0.

It’s rumored that MSI would bring exciting news to us at upcoming CES by emerging MSI Wind U270 with 1.6GHz AMD Zacate processor. According to a small Taipei-based event, the new machine will become official in the coming days. As a 11.6″ netbook, the Wind U270 features a 1.6GHz Zacate processor, 4GB of RAM, and 320-500GB HDD hard drive. It has no optical drive. The MSI Wind U270 battery also highlights a VGA output, two USB 2.0 ports, a single USB 3.0 socket, a Kensington lock port, 4-in-1 card reader, HDMI port, Ethernet jack and an overly glossy 1366 x 768 resolution panel. No word on pricing and release date yet.

Do high performance notebook computers necessarily need to be big and clunky? MSI just rolled out its new generation Wind U270 laptop which is light and portable like a netbook, but has a comfortable 12.1-inch screen, a full-size Chicklet keyboard, and features AMD’s powerful new dual core E-350 processor with AMD Radeon™ HD 6310 Discrete-Class display chip for awesome display performance on par with that of a discrete graphics card. Both highly portable and powerful, the MSI Wind U270 AC adapter gives you the best of both worlds.

This is obviously affected by the presence of a video subsystem AMD Radeon 6310 welded directly into the APU. Field tests confirm that the video section of AMD Fusion can make the best possible resolution of 1366×768 pixels shcermo of the Wind U270 allows you to watch videos in HD 720p and 1080p without any slowdown or a decent 3D gaming.

MSI started showing off the Wind U270 laptop in December and I got a chance to check out the transportable laptop at CES in January. But the company has finally gotten around to putting out a press release, so we finally have detailed specs for the MSI Wind U270.

The MSI worked fine when connected to our TV and we think it can make a nice little makeshift media centre for viewing videos and listening to music. Its 500GB hard drive also allows you to store a decent amount of media on it so you won't have to make extensive use of external hard drives. But if you did, you'd be able to take advantage of USB 3.0 and transfer files a lot quicker than you would be able to with a regular USB 2.0 drive.

MSI Wind U270 netbook has shown it’s self at a press event in Taipel an early preview of some of its CES wares to the local media. Among the devices on display by far the most interesting was the 11.6 inch MSI U270 which was running on an AMD development platform. A Rep from MSI let us know that it was in fact running on the 1.6- GHz Zacate Processor from AMD. The unit has a very thin bezel around its 1366 x 768 resolution display. As for other specs we know they are planning a 320-500GB HDD and up to 4GB of RAM.The U270 also offers i USB 3.0, 2 x USB 2.0, VGA out, HDMI, SD card reader and the standard audio jack, ethernet & kensington lock. The finish of the unit is very glossy and a finger print magnet just like its screen.

The overall results U270 is very good, but still does not remove the APU module that Fusion can feel as slow as a normal Intel Atom netbook in some circumstances. If you surf the web and come across a site that has lots of Flash ads, for example, can last up to half of the CPU and slow things greatly. This is despite the Fusion E-350 has two cores. In short, the MSI Wind U270 charger is better than the typical netbook 10In running dual-core Intel Atom processor (like the Acer Aspire One Happy), but it still feels slow in certain situations. As a netbook, you can use for basic web browsing, creation of Office documents, view photos, listen to music and watch videos.

Companies releasing info on their 2011 products prior to CES could lessen the importance of the Las Vegas show. However, with the plethora of technology which will be on display in Nevada, one of two early releases can’t hurt too much. The Wind U270 netbook is an 11.6-inch device with a 1.6GHz AMD Zacate processor - the first we’ve seen with this processor. The U270 will have 4GB of RAM, a 320GB hard drive and no optical drive. Other specs include a VGA output, two USB 2.0 ports, a single USB 3.0 socket, a Kensington lock port, 4-in-1 card reader, Ethernet jack and an 1366 x 768 resolution panel.
