The Dell Latitude E6420 ATG represents a fundamental shift in the way that Dell handles its semi-rugged business notebooks. The old ATG models were essentially nothing more than standard Dell Latitude notebooks with a different lid along with a few other bits and MIL SPEC tests. The E6420 ATG on the other hand features a completely unique chassis design made from generous amounts of magnesium alloy, rubber gaskets covering the data ports and a spill-proof backlit keyboard with drain hole. The E6420 ATG is the first Dell ATG model to meet or exceed MIL-STD-810G and IP5x standards for vibration, humidity, altitude, dust, shock, high temperature and low temperature. In short, the Dell T54FJ battery semi-rugged notebook is a serious step up from those older models that were largely just glorified business notebooks.

One of the features of the Dell Latitude E6420 ATG is an optional carrying handle. It might sound unnecessary, but in fact the notebook's very tough outer shell makes it look a bit like a briefcase, and it weighs over 2kg. The handle could come in quite useful. There are also non-optional rubber protectors for the two back corners of the notebook, under whose hinged covers lie most of the machine's ports and connectors. These protectors extend round to the back of the chassis, providing some strong insulation against knocks and bumps, as well as helping to prevent dust and water getting into the laptop's innards.
In case you missed it earlier in the review, the Dell Latitude E6420 ATG features a LED-backlit keyboard that is also spill resistant. The keyboard has a standard key layout similar to the previous generation of Latitudes and might be a welcome feature for those people who don't like the "Chiclet" style keyboards found on most modern notebooks. The only minor complaint I have with the keyboard on this Dell Latitude E6420 ATG charger is that the mouse buttons for the built-in pointing stick have a feel and position that makes them easy to mistake for the space bar button when typing quickly. On more than one occasion, I pressed the right or left mouse button when I meant to type a space. Typing pressure is minimal, with each press making a very soft click when the key is fully triggered. The key noise is much quieter compared to a modern HP EliteBook or ProBook business laptop. The keyboard tray also has excellent support and doesn't bend or flex under even the heaviest typing pressure.
Equipped with an optional easy-to-carry handle, the E6420 ATG makes a convenient travel companion. Its extra-bright 14" HD reinforced display makes viewing outdoors easy while the optional backlit keyboard helps you stay productive when in flight or in low-light settings. The resistive touchscreen offers an alternative to typing for input and responds even when wearing protective gloves.
As a multimedia machine, the E6420 AGT is a mixed bag. The audio, while decent, is somewhat muted compared with that of the E5420--perhaps the extra armor on the E6420 AGT muffles the sound a bit. I like the integrated webcam, though: It captured good-looking high-def video, even in low-light situations, and Dell's Webcam Central utility offers a good array of controls for adjusting backlighting, brightness, contrast, color, and even gamma. It's a great tool for Skype video calls, recording video, or capturing snapshots (up to 1920 by 1080 resolution).
The E6420 ATG's matte-black deck offers a comfortable palm rest and includes a set of volume buttons on its right-hand side. On the deck's upper left-hand corner are three indicator lights that give the status of the system's Dell T54FJ battery, hard drive, and wireless signal. To help protect the E6420 ATG's display, Dell has reinforced the screen's frame and equipped it with a spill-resistant seal.
A Windows Experience Index (WEI) of 5.5 (out of 7.9) is probably on the low side for this notebook, given that the processor in our review unit is the slowest of those on offer and bettered by those in the preconfigured options. The indications are, then, that the Dell Latitude E6420 is a decent performer.
First impression of ATG makes one to compare it with its predecessor, E6420 and E6420 XTR. A close look at the lid will make one familiar with the Tri-metal chassis tested under MIL-STD 810g military standard. As stated earlier, the machine can hold out to extreme pressure including intense cold and heat conditions. Gray colored lid of ATG is covered in textured black border that gives sturdy look to the gadget.
