The Acer Aspire 5742 is a mainstream notebook with Optimus that was announced in 2010. It features a 15.6-inch 1366 x 768 resolution LED backlit display. The laptop is powered by Intel Core i processors. The laptop comes with the latest NVIDIA Optimus technology. This Acer laptop is configured in different capability. It comes with 3D Vision. The Acer Aspire 5742 comes with a Blu-Ray drive. It is available in black.
I think that this is definitely one of theou can best well priced laptops buy at the moment especially with the fantastic offers in the sales. In my tech opinion the new Core i3-370M which has been used instead of the more common slower intel core is a real boost keeping up the speed of applications.
The Aspire 5742 laptop’s keyboard is like the new Acer Aspire Timeline X 4820TG and Aspire 5745Glaptop’s keyboard, sporting isolated, chiclet-styled keys that are nice to type on. The Aspire 5742’s keyboard also has a dedicated number pad on the right which is good. The Aspire 5742’s laptop dips ever so slightly while typing but overall works just fine.
The Aspire 5742 laptop’s palmrest has a finely textured surface which is nice and responsive while moving the cursor around with your finger. If anything, the touchpad could’ve been a bit larger, but it is of average size. The Aspire 5742’s singe-strip mouse button takes a while getting used to, but one can definitely work with it.
The 15.6", 16:9 aspect ratio Acer Aspire 5742 laptop HD wide display provides ample space for work and entertainment. The large-capacity hard disk drive can store all your files and multimedia, and conveniently share them with others using the 2-in-1 card reader. From this article, you can get Acer Aspire Modem driver to connect your laptop with WiFi network.

The Aspire 5742 doesn't earn any kudos with two and a half hours of battery life. The weak 48 Wh Acer Aspire 5742 battery takes its toll here. It's not due to the power consumption because it is, as we will see in a moment, rather low.
The runtime during an internet surf session with enabled WLAN is 2:36 hours (156 minutes). We visited news sites and executed a few downloads in this time. Undemanding users can boost the battery life up to 3:35 hours. These 215 minutes determined by BatteryEater's Reader's test are insignificant for routine use though (idle, lowest brightness, disabled wireless modules).
A DVD runtime test determined 160 minutes (2:40 hours). The 4400 mAh Aspire 5742 battery is ready for the next movie session after 1:41 hours (96 minutes, recharging).
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit is the platform of choice, paired with McAfee, Norton Online Backup, CyberLink PowerDVD 9, NTI Media Maker, Skype, a bunch of game demos (which you can install thanks to the annoying Oberon Media), an RSS reader called eSobi and Shredder (which is a trial secure file deletion program).
Each Acer Aspire 5742 Laptop computer has been given an overall PC Checker score based on the components it is built with so even if you know nothing about computers you can see our overall grade for each Acer Aspire 5742 laptop!
The Aspire 5742 meets your daily computing needs with blazing processor performance and impressive graphics. HD media playback offers richer entertainment at home or on the road, while boundary-free wireless communication keeps you in touch with family and friends all the time. What’s more, Acer’s special 16:9 Home Touch Design provides simple usability for more relaxed computing.
We recently posted our review of the Acer Aspire 5742, a 15-inch budget system with an Intel Core i3 processor, 4 GB of RAM and a 320 GB hard drive. Tipping the scale at exactly 5 pounds, the Aspire 5742 is more portable than other 15-inch budget systems, but you’ll want to bring a charger as it only lasted 3 hours and 11 minutes on our Acer 5742 battery test.
Both the lid and the deck of the Aspire 5742 are a matte black that resists fingerprints. It has grid-like indentations patterned to look like diamond plating. Looks-wise, it's on a par with less expensive Toshiba Satellites, such as the L or C series, but not as attractive as the pricier Samsung SF510 ($629), which has a distinctive wave design, ivory lid, and chocolate brown interior.
The Acer Aspire 5742 Laptop meets your daily computing needs with an Intel® processor and integrated graphics. HD media playback offers richer entertainment at home or on the road, while boundary-free wireless communication keeps you in touch with family and friends. What's more, the Acer® FineTip keyboard and multi-gesture touchpad provide simple usability for more relaxed computing. The 15.6" HD wide display provides ample space for work and entertainment. The Intel® Pentium® combines with integrated Intel® HD Graphics to provide the performance you need for daily multitasking. Store all your files and multimedia on the large-capacity hard disk drive, and conveniently share them with others using the 2-in-1 card reader.
In construction, the Acer Aspire 5742 is smart if a little unimpressive. It’s a far cry from Lenovo’s IdeaPad Z560 M37AFUK in terms of style, but its textured lid and svelte proportions make the most of the lower-cost materials used.
Acer’s usual ‘lilypad’ keyboard has no dedicated special function keys, but is easy to type on and is accompanied by a smooth recessed muti-gesture trackpad with a single button which tilts to provide left and right clicks.
Pros
Solid Performance From Updated Core i3 Processor
Well Priced
Cons
Glossy Screen Produces Too Much Glare And Reflections
Lots Of Trialware
It also has enough battery power for mainstream mobile users. The Aspire 5742 features a standard 6-cell (48WHr) battery, but it ran for 5 hours 24 minutes on our MobileMark 2007 battery test. That's nearly an hour more than the Sony EB33FM/BJ's time of 4 hours 33 minutes. However, we were impressed with Sony's battery time. Meaning, we're doubly impressed with the Acer Aspire 5742 battery life!
The 15.6-inch HD widescreen display provides ample space for multitasking and entertainment. A smart Intel Core processor combines with integrated Intel HD Graphics and high-definition technologies to deliver high-quality images and visual effects. Store all your files and multimedia on the large- capacity hard disk, and conveniently share them with others using the two-in-one card reader.
The downsides of the 5742 is found in outdoor use, the connectivity and the input devices. The HD+ display is moderately bright, but the intense reflections on the glare type screen provide for adverse feelings. In regards to connectivity, especially gamers will miss eSATA, USB 3.0, and ExpressCard. The keyboard doesn't even come close to a good office input. It's too spongy. The adjective can also be used for the base unit, which groaningly allows itself to be twisted with a bit of pressure. Additionally, the poor sound of the mono speaker can't be overheard either.
If you are looking for strong 3D performance for 700 euros and don't have high expectations on input devices and interfaces, you can turn to the Acer Aspire 5742G-458G64Mnkk.
