HP Pavilion dv7-3173nr Notebook PC Review

One of the great paradoxes of modern day computing is that desktop computers continue to get smaller and more energy efficient while notebook computers have increased in screen-size, features and capabilities. At the top of the “desktop-replacement” category of 17-inch notebooks is HP’s dv7-3173nr, its a Blu-Ray slinging, 7-pound weighing, do-it-all notebook that rings in at $1,400 and banishes the thought that you should ever want a desktop PC.

While its naming scheme is the one area where HP could work on, the main difference between the two models is hinted at by the number five in the one, and seven in the other. Whereas the dv5 was a 15.4in notebook, the dv7 is, as you might have guessed, its 17in twin. And when I say twin I mean it; apart from the increase in size and a higher-capacity eight-cell HP Pavilion DV7-3173NR battery compared to the dv7-3173nr's six-cell model, not much has changed in terms of either looks or specifications.

Going for its looks and chassis first (we're shallow that way), like with the dv5 it's a very attractive beasty. It can basically be divided up into two parts, with the entire lid being black, while the bottom half is silver.

Expanding on the sophisticated elegance of the current line, the HP Pavilion dv7-3173nr Refurbished Entertainment Laptop Computer is defined by modern lines and surprising iovations inside and out. This HP comes with a 2.3GHz AMD Turion II M520 Dual-Core processor, 6GB of DDR2 RAM, 500GB hard drive, LightScribe Blu-ray ROM with DVD±R/RW Double Layer Support.

The 17-inch display has a native resolution of 1680 x 1050. Although we generally observed good viewing angles from the top and sides, the screen is reflective when the background is dark. We noticed excellent color and sharpness when watching the Rocky Balboa Blu-ray disc (even in the climactic fight scene), but even in High Performance mode, we wished the screen were a bit brighter. The chrome speakers, backed by a subwoofer, produced thunderous sound.

For people interested in watching TV, the dv7-3173nr also comes with a built-in TV tuner, an amenity the 18-inch Acer Aspire 8920G doesn’t have yet. The included remote is lightweight, with buttons large enough to press easily, and it stows away neatly on the side of the notebook. When we watched television next to a window, the sound was excellent, but the resolution was pretty mediocre; then again, this was using the included detachable antenna, which is pretty mediocre itself. The tuner receives both analog and digital signals.

The HP Pavilion dv7-3173nr ran for 3 hours and 21 minutes on our video playback battery drain test, which is an impressive performance for a desktop replacement, especially one without a giant extending HP Pavilion DV7-3173NR AC Adapter sticking out awkwardly from the bottom. The Dell Studio 17 ran for an additional hour, but at the cost of a bulky 9-cell battery.

The 17in screen has a 1,600x900 resolution that gives significantly more desktop space than 15in laptops with 1,366x768 resolutions. While it seemed dimmer than other LED-backlit screens, contrast and colour accuracy were better, especially where flesh tones were involved.

Driving the HP Pavilion dv7-3173nr's stellar performance is Intel's new mobile quad-core processor, the 1.6GHz Core i7-720QM. Dual-core laptops are simply no match for this quad-core beast. Helping the processor rip through our benchmark tests is 6GB of DDR3 memory and the Nvidia GeForce GT 230M graphics card, which shows up to the party with 1GB of its own video memory.

A further annoyance comes from the cooling fans. With that powerful specification just begging you to tax it with gaming and heavy multitasking, it won’t be long before the HP’s noisy fans whirr into action. The speakers go loud enough to drown them out, but in quiet moments you’ll be in no doubt that the HP is working hard to stay cool. Battery life isn’t that impressive, with a result of just 3hrs 23mins in our light-usage test, but that isn’t altogether surprising given the power on tap and the size of the screen.

The large screen means there's plenty of width to include a full-sized keyboard, with a chunky Enter key and a full numeric keypad. The keys are moulded into a comfortable shape, and have a light action and crisp feedback. The metallic touchpad is surprisingly responsive, with chunky buttons that feel responsive. At 3.5kg, the dv7-3173nr isn't particularly portable, but its HP Pavilion DV7-3173NR battery lasted a respectable three and-a-half hours.

The 17 inch WXGA (1440x900) wide screen is called 'Infinity BrightView' by HP. However, the measured maximum brightness (in the middle of the screen) of 157 cd/m² is not very bright. Because of the reflecting surface, the brightness is only sufficient for indoor operation. Furthermore, you should not have a powerful light source in front of the screen, because this would lead to heavy reflections. Due to the low brightness, the contrast ratio of 183:1 is rather moderate (in the middle). At least the maximum brightness is not further limited in battery operation.

For those who want rich digital entertainment capability coupled with desktop-caliber performance in a stunning mobile design, the HP Pavilion dv7-3173nr Entertainment Notebook PC delivers! Expanding on the sophisticated elegance of the current line, the new dv7-3173nr laptop is defined by fluid, modern lines and metalized finishes with surprising innovations inside and out. A high gloss HP Imprint2 finish in onyx and chrome features a grid like mesh pattern for subtle contrast to the liquid appearance of the metallic finish. The streamlined look is enhanced with a color matched keyboard and touchpad. Touch media controls light up and become visible only when the system is powered on, further enhancing the clean appearance. Providing more choices than ever, QuickPlay enables access to DVDs, videos, photos, music, karaoke, games, Internet TV, and streamed or recorded TV at the touch of a button with the included NTSC/ATSC TV Tuner. Built-in demos show you how to add music to your slide shows or videos with drag and drop functionality and much more. An HDMI port enables you to watch films on an HDTV. Muvee autoProducer makes creating films complete with effects and transitions a snap. Extras include dual headphone jacks, 1 pair of stereo earbud headphones and an HP Mobile Remote Control.

The retail-only Pavilion dv7-3173nr comes in a single fixed configuration built around Intel's newest Centrino 2 platform; components include a 2.26GHz Core 2 Duo P8400 CPU (one of the new "power optimized" models) and a generous 4GB of fast 800MHz RAM, with 64-bit Windows Vista to take advantage of it. It's not surprising that such a well-stocked system finished at or near the front of the pack on CNET Labs performance benchmarks. The Pavilion dv7-3173nr finished statistically even with the Gateway P-7811FX on our multitasking test, and it pulled in just ahead of the Gateway on our Photoshop CS3 test.

Replacing a desktop PC and entertainment. Get the HP Pavilion dv7-3173nr to edit and enjoy photos and high-definition videos using the large widescreen display, plus listen to music in premium audio and play games. With this Laptop PC, you can work in multiple applications at the same time and count on fast data entry with the numeric keypad. What’s more, you’ll experience some of the best of the Web like Hulu, Netflix,Twitter, and Pandora with stellar HP laptop.

HP has included a dedicated ATi Radeon HD 4350 graphics card which packs in more 3D power than everything but the Acer Aspire 5745, but the basic processor means that modern games and intensive design packages still suffer from lag.

A mixed specification and outdated OS are compensated in part by the excellent features and quality build of the Pavilion dv7-3173nr, but anyone looking for a high performance machine should look to the Intel Core laptops.

This HP dv7-3173nr 17.3″ Pavilion entertainment notebook also comes packed with Web cam with microphone, LightScribe Blu-ray drive (Blu-ray combo), Altec Lansing speakers with SRS Premium Sound as well as HDMI port to display video from the notebook on a HDTV. Other essential features include 802.11b/g/n WiFi, 5-in-1 media card reader and full-size keyboard with integrated numeric keypad. It packed with HP Pavilion DV7-3173NR charger which offers up to 4 hours of life, there’s also HP mobile remote control. The HP MediaSmart, Microsoft Works, McAfee AntiVirus Plus 2010 are installed. Price, qvc has HP dv7-3173nr 17.3″ Notebook w/ 6GB RAM 500GB HD Blu-ray Win7 McAfee for $948.

Dell Inspiron M5030 15.6" Laptop Review

Dell has released a new AMD-boosted laptop with the AMD Vision technology, called Dell Inspiron M5030. Dell Inspiron M5030 Laptop is a mid-range laptop suitable for every walk of life. The Dell Inspiron M5030 laptop deal combines excellent productivity features and great multimedia options with the power of Windows 7 Home Premium. This laptop has dimensions 1.48 inch front/ 1.58 inch back for height, width 14.88 inch and depth 9.64 inch.

The Dell Inspiron M5030 comes with an AMD Athlon II Dual-core Mobile Processor P340 running at 2.2GHz. It also has 4GB of memory and a big 500GB hard drive. These specs don’t blow you away, but they are decent enough for everyday tasks and some light entertainment uses. The laptop has ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250 graphics which is shared video memory. That means this is not a gaming system, but can handle light duty.

Specifications:
  • Processors : 2.1GHz AMD Athlon II P320 dual-core mobile processor
  • Memory : Up to 6GB6 Dual Channel 1333MHz DDR3 DRAM.
  • Chipset : AMD M880G+SB820M
  • Graphics : ATI Mobility Radeon HD4250
  • Display : 15.6″ High Definition (720p) 1366 x 768 WLED Display with TrueLifeTM
  • Audio and Speakers : Dell Audio – 2 spkrs @ 1W ea
  • Hard Drives: 500GB6 5400/7200 RPM SATA hard drive.
  • Optical Drives : Tray Load DVD+/-RW with Dual Layer DVD+R write capability
  • Battery : 6-cell 48 WHr Li-Ion Battery
  • Camera : Integrated 0.3MP webcam with Microphone
  • Wireless : Atheros Wireless-N 802.11n Mini-Card (standard)
  • Operating System : Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit, Genuine Windows 7 Professional 64-Bit, Genuine Windows Vista Home Basic 32-Bit
This Dell Inspiron M5030 AC adapter is powered by 2.1 GHz AMD Athlon II P320 dual-core mobile processor, which works together with ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250 graphics with AMD M880G+SB820M Chipset family. The Athlon ii P320 at 2.1 GHz clock frequency will give out moderate level of performance, which should be enough for your daily home and computing needs. You should be able to browse internet, use emails, spreadsheets, word processors and your other common programs with relatively fast speed. You can even run your video processing and compression, and you should be fine if you do it occasionally. However, if you perform tasks that need very heavy processing power ( for example compiling a lot of program, high end gaming, video compression, professional CAD software) , we recommend that you look for notebooks with processors that has some more horse power – Intel core i5 or the AMDs Phenom ii could be better – but then they will be expensive.

Enjoy smooth multitasking and excellent performance with 3 GB of installed RAM. Stay connected with family and friends via Web chats using the built-in webcam and microphone. Other features include a 320 GB hard drive, ultra-fast Wireless-N Wi-Fi networking, a multi-format memory card reader, and an 8x CD/DVD drive with dual-layer DVD burning capabilities.

Dell Inspiron M5030 has obviously grown thin packing with a new sexy look. I mean Dell laptops before are cute but this one has become a stunner — You know what I’m saying? Next will be about its color. Before, Inspiron models always get the shorter end of the stick when it comes to the design. But somehow, Dell pulled this one pretty nicely — and actually I thought the black-shiny gloss of the Dell Inspiron M5030 charger is very appealing. The real question for this laptop is why did it pick an AMD processor instead? I know some aren’t satisfied but this is very justifiable thinking that if they released this one with an Intel Core i-5 then certainly the price would soar up. That goes the same for its older brother.

As with most of Dell’s laptops, the buyer will have the choice of colours, in this case it will be black, blue, pink and red. These are well thought out laptops and even if the fact that there is an AMD chip running show means nothing to the user, the fact that there is a built in webcam, stereo surround sound speakers and multi card reader installed on the machine probably will make a difference.

Dell Inspiron M5030 laptop is powered by a 2.1GHz AMD Athlon II P320 dual-core mobile processor, a 15.6-inch LED backlit display with resolution of 1366×768 pixel, an ATI Mobility Radeon HD4250 graphics, 4GB DDR3 RAM, a 320GB or 500GB hard drive (5,400 rpm), a DVD burner, 802.11n Wi-Fi, 1.3 megapixel webcam, multi-format card reader, and Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit OS.

Dell Inspiron M5030 is an affordable laptop equipped with 15.6-inch LED display screen , 2.2 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo T6600 and 8x Double layer DVD Writer . It comes with 320 GB hard drive, 3 GB DDR3 RAM, 1.3MP built in webcam with Integrated Microphone,Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity , 7 in1 digital media card reader and runs on DOS.

The Dell Inspiron M5030 lets you easily keep in touch with friends and family with the 802.11n wireless capability. With a 6-cell lithium-ion Dell Inspiron M5030 battery that can give you up to 4.5 hours of battery life, the gorgeous red Dell Inspiron M5030 is ideal for effortless home computing and easy mobile entertainment!

Review of HP ProBook 4525s

In terms of weight and dimensions, the 4525s is identical to the 4520s; the ports and features offered are also identical. it is availabel with LED HD anti-glare screen along with spill-resistant keyboard. Other than it's size and full size keyboard (with number pad) it is worth noting that the 4525s is basically a larger version of the 4325s (13.3'') and the 4425s (14.0''). Their starting prices are also similar. This enables the users not only choice for a range of options but to also pick from 3 common sizes without sacrificing features.

Take care of business with the stylish, affordable HP ProBook 4525s Notebook PC. This notebook has a 15.6-inch diagonal HD display, a full-size spill-resistant keyboard and numeric keypad, and wireless connectivity options for on-the-go professionals.

I would like share with you about two kinds of HP laptops. Those are belonging to the HP ProBook series with the codename of HP ProBook 4525s and HP ProBook 6555b. In this article, I will introduce the first one, which is regarded as a business notebook. Actually, this is a kind of notebook for you which will be headed for India soon. I also get its price tag on the purchase for Rs. 30,000. But it is a pity we have no idea about its released date.

The HP ProBook 4525s charger you can have both operating systems with Microsoft's SUSE Linux Enterprise 11. You can come up with two different processors: the AMD Phenom Triple Core II P820 and P520 Dual Core AMD Turion II. The first three core processor, an operating frequency of 1.80 GHz, 512 KB L2 cache per core, for a total of 1.5 megabytes of dedicated L2 cache and memory controller for DDR3 1333 MHz processor is a second dual core 2.30 GHz with 1 megabyte of L2 cache per core, for a total of 2 megabytes of dedicated L2 cache, but the integrated memory controller is DDR3 1066 MHz Both have a thermal design power of 25W.

The business features of these ProBooks work in harmony with the mainstream components inside. They allow the machine to run like your average consumer laptop rather than just a specialised business tool. The high quality processors and strong security defence features will make it a valued tool and despite the darkness issues with the 4520s its DVD/Blu-ray quality is fine. The ProBooks are the more affordable versions of HP’s EliteBook Series, with good usability and better functionality.

The HP ProBook 4525s Notebook PC lets you work smarter. This professionally-oriented laptop has a 15.6-inch LED-backlit HD anti-glare display, making it a mid-sized productivity platform equipped with state-of-the-art technology you can use. The HP ProBook 4525s Notebook PC has an AMD Athlon II Dual-Core P340 2.2GHz processor mated to 2 gigs of DDR3 memory for a comprehensive, business-ready portable PC. Save whatever you'e got: the HP ProBook 4525s battery comes with a 320GB hard drive and DVD+/-RW SuperMulti Dual Layer LightScribe optical drive. Connect whatever you need: the HP ProBook 4525s Notebook PC also features (3) USB 2.0 ports, HDMI, audio input/outputs and even an eSATA/USB combination port for your various peripherals. Connectivity isn't a problem either with 802.11b/g/n wireless and Bluetooth 2.1 +EDR built right in. Produce smartly: let the HP ProBook 4525s Notebook PC do the work for you!

Respectable performance from the AMD Turion II processor means you can comfortably browse the web, fiddle with your spreadsheets and listen to music at the same time. In our benchmarking tests, the HP matched the Samsung R530-JA02UK, and was only comfortably beaten by the Lenovo IdeaPad Z560.

The number pad is great, island keys look nice and feel good. The track pad has a ton of settings and options so with a little fiddling you should be able to find the settings that work for you. The display is definitely widescreen but looks great. There wasn't too much bloatware installed - mainly just a bunch of HP programs, but they were easily disabled/removed. Comes with McAffe 60 day trial which I uninstalled. Also comes with Office 2010 starter which provides Word & Excel limited versions. I love that this has a 7200 RPM harddrive as most laptops skimp with slower 5400 RPM options. Webcam works great and has a built-in light/flash. HP & Windows 7 even have face recognition for logging in, although that doesn't always work. The top has a matte finish with what I can best describe as a fine wood grain look that's somewhat grey/brown.

An integrated ATi graphics card is also included and the HP ProBook 4525s AC adapter has enough power to run high-definition video and older games, as well as the latest photo and video-editing suites. Again, only the Lenovo has more graphical power.

Getting at your information quickly is important to business users. HP’s QuickLook 3 helps you access email, dates and times, contacts and tasks within seconds. HP QuickWeb does the same for getting online even if your computer is turned off.

To protect your data, besides security software (see specs below) the HP 3D DriveGuard will keep your hard drive safe in the event of a drop, thanks to the accelerometer detecting the drop and telling the hard drive to stop.

Another plus factor on the Sony VAIO VGN-CR220E is its 200 GB hard disk drive. That's a lot of space compared with other laptops on the same price range.

The Intel Core 2 Duo processor has two computational execution cores in a single processor, providing greater system response when running multi-threaded applications simultaneously with no significant increase in power consumption. It's optimized for multitasking and is ready to support the Microsoft Windows Vista operating system. It can simultaneously run multiple demanding applications--such as graphics-intensive games or serious number-crunching business productivity applications--while downloading music or running virus-scanning security programs in the background. Some of the advanced Intel innovations of the Core 2 Duo processor include:
  1. Smart Memory Access: Improves system performance by hiding memory latency, thus optimizing the use of available computer data bandwidth to provide data to the processor when and where it is needed.
  2. Advanced Digital Media Boost: Effectively doubles the execution speed for instructions used widely in multimedia and graphics applications.
  3. Dynamic Power Coordination: Coordinates Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology and idle power-management state (C-states) transitions independently per core to help save power.
  4. Deeper Sleep with Dynamic Cache Sizing: Saves power by flushing cache data to system memory during periods of inactivity to lower CPU voltage.

This thin-and-light mobile masterpiece features an array of entertainment and design extras, including a built-in web cam, AV controls, powerful, cutting-edge technologies and a comfortable, easy-to-clean keyboard.

The VAIO CR Series VGN-CR220E Notebook Computer from Sony is the perfect blend of mobility, style, and performance. This notebook PC will become the center of your digital entertainment universe, whether you're home, at school, working, or on the road. Perfect for the digital road warrior, the computer will help you get the most out of your digital devices. You'll be able to use the notebook with digital cameras, video cameras, MP3 players and more.

One big issue that you should take care of right away is that the Sony does not come with any recovery CD's or DVD's. To fix this problem use the utility on the computer to make your recovery disks. The recovery files that it uses to make these disks are kept on a hidden partition on the hard drive so if you have a hard drive failure before you make these disks you have no way to recover from this situation. Do that before you do anything else! It's very easy and quick.

To maximize Sony VAIO VGN-CR220E battery life, notebook computer processors are often designed to save more energy and run cooler than desktop processors. The drawback is slower performance, but more memory can help, which it won't consume energy or radiate heat. Even better, up to 4GB of RAM can now be found in budget configurations. If you want more memory later, expansion is often a simple procedure.

The Sony VAIO VGN-CR220E charger is a member of Sony's CR series which means it has a 14 inch screen. A lot of you may be confused by how Sony names their VAIO models. For one, I've noticed at the Sony Style stores that their VAIO CR series now has CR290xx models but I think the difference between the Sony VAIO models in the CR series lies mainly on the colors and the processors.

Video is powered by the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100, which uses shared video memory (up to 358 MB allocated from the system memory) and provides Windows Vista Aero interface support and enhanced 3-D graphics performance--delivering over 2x scores on 3-DMark 06. Intel Clear Video Technology provides outstanding video playback with sharper image quality, increased clarity, and customizable color controls. It also enables enhanced visual quality of interlaced content on progressive displays.

This package contains the VGN-CR220E notebook PC, rechargeable lithium-ion Sony VAIO VGN-CR220E battery, AC adapter, and operating instructions. It is backed by a one-year limited hardware warranty, and Sony offers 1-year of toll-free telephone technical assistance.
