New HP ProBook "S-series" Laptops announced at Berlin

HP today announced the latest additions to its consumer and business notebook lines with 11 new models utilizing AMD’s latest VISION Technology–the AMD “Llano” A-series Accelerated Processing Units (APUs). HP and AMD claim these new processors that combine a traditional CPU and a graphics processor (GPU) in a single chip provide exceptional performance at an affordable price.

Hockey was careful not to directly compare his company's Intel and AMD notebooks, but he did say that when compared to earlier AMD-powered HP notebooks, each of the five new AMD-powered notebooks have improved graphics performance and better HP ProBook 4535s battery life – seven hours and 15 minute on the 14-inch 6465b when running MobileMark, for example, and six hours and 30 minutes on the 15.6-inch 6565b. "Basically 'all-day' battery life," he called it.

These are available in three configurations, which feature nearly identical system specs, outside of the display diagonal, since this measures 14-inch in the 4435s and 4436s and 15.6-inch in the 4535s.

The HP ProBook s-series (ProBook 4535s, ProBook 4435s and ProBook 4436s) combines a durable brushed-aluminum finish in a metallic gray color with either 14-inch or 15-inch HD displays. These notebooks come loaded with the new ArcSoft TotalMedia Suite that allows you to play, edit and create video and audio files. The notebooks are also equipped with HDMI ports for connecting to modern external displays or HDTVs.

Although there is plenty of new technology under the hoods of these new laptops, the laptops themselves should look familiar to anyone acquainted with HP’s current notebooks. In fact, these new AMD-powered PCs have the same chassis designs as the Intel-equipped versions on the HP Pavilion and HP ProBook lines.

The 4435s (14-inch) and 4436s (15-inch) will be both powered by the AMD A4-3300M (clocked at 2.5GHz) or the AMD A6-3400MX (clocked at 2.3GHZ, quad-core) and will have plenty of storage: between 250GB and 750GB.

Those chipsets, by the way, are AMD's A60M FCH in HP's higher-end 6565b and 6465b notebooks, and the A70M FCH in the lower-end 4535s, 4436s, and 4435s. Don't confuse "lower-end" with "consumer-level", though – although all five are business-class notebooks, the A70M FCH includes USB 3.0 support, while the A60M FCH doesn't.

HP ProBook 4435s, 4436s and 4535s Specifications:

HP ProBook s-series (ProBook 4535s, 4435s and 4436s), business notebooks with a nice brushed-aluminum finish (picture at the top of the post). The HP ProBook s-series starts at $519, it will be available on June 27.

HP has announced two Pavilion notebooks and two ProBooks for release in the UK, all of which are powered by AMD Fusion APUs.“HP and AMD’s relationship continues to evolve as we collaboratively make strides to benefit customers through outstanding technology innovation and improved performance,” said Leslie Sobon, corporate vice president for worldwide marketing at AMD.

In terms of industrial design, the "identical boxes" to which Hockey referred are nice boxes, indeed. Gone are HP's annoying "Christmas lights" multicolored LEDs, and the cases are smoother, sleeker, and apparently sturdier, based on HP's Forge design platform. The HP ProBook 4535s AC adapter have aluminum and magnesium cases, and the ProBook 4535s, 4436s, and 4435s cases are plastic and aluminum.

If you are looking for something a little more business-orientated, then the HP ProBook 6465b and HP ProBook 4535s use AMD Vision Pro technology, which is said to enhance performance and increase security. Both of these lappies have been given an aluminium finish.

Without seeing the final product it's impossible to make a judgement, but at first glance AMD seem to be in the right place when it comes to pricing for what must be considered (without criticism) a budget mobile processor.

HP DuraFinish as the other ProBooks but these new models also include AMD VISION Pro technology. The 14-inch ProBook 6465b and 15-inch ProBook 6565b are both available with the same 3-cell, 6-cell and 9-cell HP ProBook 4535s battery options as the Intel-equipped systems but HP reps claim these new AMD-equipped notebooks deliver battery life "as good or better than" Intel configurations with similar performance.

The AMD A8-3500M processor, which these laptops use, garnered an impressive four and a half stars in its TechRadar review, where we noted: "The whole thing hangs together in an efficient, cost effective package under the AMD Vision umbrella."

On the business side, the AMD-equipped ProBooks offer AMD VISION Pro Technology and AMD Radeon Dual Graphics on the ProBook s-series and APU/UMA graphics on the ProBook b-series. Both solutions will enable multitasking for videoconferencing and web browsing while the dual graphics configurations provide the performance you need for graphics-intensive applications.

Pricing and availability will vary by region and not all models are available in all regions.

The new notebooks offer AMD A-series APUs, designed to deliver increased processing speed and visual performance with longer battery life. For consumers, HP Pavilion dv- and g-series notebooks offer optional dual graphics, balancing performance with power needs by switching between single- and dual-graphics modes. AMD Image Enhance with AMD Perfect Picture HD also automatically adjusts for HP ProBook 4535s adapter dynamic color and contrast, making skin tones appear realistic and video smoother and more vivid.

The HP ProBook s-series (ProBook 4535s, 4435s and 4436s) combines a brushed-aluminum finish in a metallic gray color in addition to a touchpad with gesture support and an integrated high-definition (HD)(3) webcam. AMD Image Enhance with AMD Perfect Picture HD(3) also automatically adjusts for dynamic color and contrast, making skin tones appear realistic.

HP ProBook 6560b 15.6-inch Review

The HP ProBook 6560b isn't flashy or as refined as an HP EliteBook and it's aimed at small business users rather than corporate types. It's not perfect by any means, but there are lots of things to like about it: good performance, solid build quality and plenty security features. However, there are also many things to dislike: it's heavy, it's noisy, it doesn't make use of switchable graphics, it could use a better keyboard and touchpad, and our review model came with the 32-bit version of Windows 7 Pro installed by default.
The HP ProBook 6560b we tested came with a 2.50GHz Intel Core i5 2nd Gen mobile processor with the ability to TurboBoost up to 3.20GHz when you have more demanding tasks. The notebook uses the more powerful Intel HD 3000 integrated graphics and has a 15.6″ anti-glare display with a 1366 x 768 resolution. The notebook has a 320GB 7200RPM hard drive and 4GB RAM. The model we reviewed has a DVD RW Drive, but you can swap out the drive for a secondary hard drive or leave the spot empty to save on weight. The notebook also has an integrated 720P webcam with dual array microphones, wireless a/b/g/n and comes with a 6 cell HP ProBook 6560b battery.

HP ProBook 6560b Specs:
  • Intel Core Processor i5-2410M (2.66/2.9 GHz, 3MB L3 Cache)
  • 2GB DDR3 / 320GB Hard Disk
  • 15.6" WXGA (1366x768 Resolution)
  • Intel HD Graphics
  • WIFI N / Bluetooth / Display Port / DVDSM / Fingerprint Reader / 1394a
  • Windows 7 Professional / Office 2010 Starter
  • 6-Cell Lithium Ion HP CC06 battery
The 15.6-inch LED backlit HD screen was not made for entertainment purposes. The image appears to look semi-washed out. As opposed to its cousins that are for consumers, the image quality does not quite compare. The standard 300:1 contrast ratio isn’t as apparent as it would be found on other models. Fortunately, for those who desire more out of their screen, HP does have an HD+ option for this model. Even though this machine was made to be durable, the screen and lid seem to be a little too flexible. This is a bit concerning, makes us wonder how much flexion it would take to damage the screen.

The ProBook 6560b includes second generation Intel Core i dual core processors for improved performance and higher graphics processing ability. The machines can support up to 16GB total DDR3 RAM, with two slots supporting dual channel memory, and internal storage is offered up to 500GB.

There is a full complement of ports included on the HP ProBook 6560b, including: 4 USB 2.0 ports; 1 eSATA/USB 2.0 Combo; 1 external VGA monitor; 1 DisplayPort (there is no HDMI port); an Ethernet port; 1 stereo microphone in; 1 stereo headphone/line-out; the charging port; and ports to attach an HP docking device or secondary HP ProBook 6560b battery. There are also slots for Express Cards and SD cards, so almost everything you could want to connect to the machine will be compatible.

Speaking of security, this Windows 7 Professional OS running ProBook 6560b XU053UT#ABA notebook features an integrated Trusted Platform Module (TPM 1.2) security chip inside, and offers a bundled security software within such as HP ProtectTools, Central Management capable, Enhanced Pre-Boot Security and HP Spare Key (requires initial user setup) right out the box. It also has security lock slot as well for added security.

Spec-wise, the ProBooks are very similar to the EliteBooks — they’re available with Intel Celeron, Core i3, i5, and i7 processors, up to 8GB of RAM, and AMD Radeon 6470 graphics. Oh, and did we mention they’ll have an HD webcam option? Both the ProBooks and the EliteBooks have HP’s new facial recognition software and the usual HP QuickWeb pre-boot environment. The b-series will start at $799.

Versatility expert. Get the job done-anywhere, anytime. From writing reports to attending mobile meetings, this HP ProBook with a 15.6-inch diagonal HD display is perfect for everyday business tasks.

Create documents, presentations and spreadsheets and quickly share them with co-workers. The new Intel architecture features 2nd generation Intel® Core™ i5 and i3 dual-core processors, offering incredible performance, responsiveness and enhanced graphics. Choose Intel® HD Graphics 3000 for responsive performance and rich media capabilities. Or, choose the AMD Radeon™ HD 6470M discrete graphics processor for an amazing visual experience with powerful performance.

Armed with SRS Premium Sound speakers, the sound is well done for a business model. The position of the speakers on this particular model is designed for docking use, as some of the other features are. Even if you’re not docked, the sound quality is still pretty good and enjoyable.

The ProBook 6560b has several options for connecting to the company network or Internet available right away. For one thing, the 10/100/1000 compatible LAN socket and for another wireless LAN standard IEEE 802.11 b/g/n. Besides that, our configuration of the ProBook has Bluetooth 2.1 EDR, a 56k modem and a 3G compatible WWAN module.

Features
  1. Genuine Windows 7 Professional
  2. All new design with bead-blast aluminum display enclosure, magnesium-reinforced chassis, wear-resistant tungsten-colored HP DuraFinish, HP DisplaySafe frame, precision latches, and keyboard in full aluminum deck
  3. 15.6" diagonal Widescreen LED-backlit display (1366 x 768)
  4. Easily hot dock with one of the optional HP docking stations
  5. Security features including HP ProtectTools, with central management across HP and non-HP client PCs
  6. HP Power Assistant allows you to conserve power, stretch HP CC06 battery run-time, accurately monitor your reported power need, and report workforce power consumption.
Because of its size and weight, the 15.6in ProBook should be considered only if you want a desktop replacement-style notebook that you'll rarely have to take on the road with you. It's quite heavy, it doesn't have USB 3.0, it doesn't make use of switchable graphics and it could use better input devices, as well as 64-bit Windows by default. HP reckons many of its customers still want the 32-bit version of Windows and by installing the 32-bit version by default, it reduces the time it takes those customers to re-image back to the 32-bit version. Since you have to set up the ProBook when you get it anyway, we think the selection for 32- or 64-bit Windows should be one of the first steps in the procedure (it didn't give us this option).

Dell’s new Latitude series is a levelheaded affair option that packs in a huge amount of value. The company is clearly Dell Latitude E6220 ac adapter to the consumerisation of the affair space by including features such as an HDMI port and single 3.5mm headphone/microphone jack, but still provides the support companies need.

The new Latitude also lacks a DisplayPort. Dell tried to push it as the business display solution for the last series of Latitude, but for this series we find more evidence of the consumerisation of business tech instead: an HDMI port. Another nod to how consumers are changing the business space is the single headphone/microphone jack, intended for use with iPhone-style headphones that include a microphone, but only use one 3.5mm jack. It's a fascinating design choice, but we'd still prefer dedicated jacks for flexibility. Also featured is a FireWire port, four USB 2.0 ports (of which contains eSATA), SD card reader, VGA out, gigabit Ethernet, 56Kbps modem and a still very business fingerprint reader and Secure Card slot. There's also a contactless Secure Card reader included if you prefer to swipe. There's an optional WWAN module too, which will launch on Vodafone, but will also be available through Telstra down the track.

The redesigned Latitude E6220 is ideal for professionals looking for a budget-friendly blend of mobility and at-your-desk computing. You can enjoy outstanding productivity with the optional backlit keyboard, ideal for in-flight use or in low-light settings, and a wide array of long-life Dell LATITUDE E6220 battery options to help keep productivity in full swing.

Coming to the outer structure and design first, Dell Latitude E6220 has a 15.6” high definition LED screen, which gives an awesome look. The backlit keyboard is stylish with is optimized to work excellent in dim light. Besides this, the front top is shinny hard tri-metal that includes anodized brushed aluminum display. Let’s have a look on the technical specifications of Dell Latitude E6220. With an option of three different processors users can truly customized it according to their needs and basic requirements. You can opt between Intel Core i3, i5 and i7 processors. Apart from this, it features three types of RAM, Among DDR3 SDRAM 1GB, 2GB and 4GB, customers prefer to go with 4GB to have best speed in their system.

The third generation of Dell’s Latitude E-Series brings Sandy Bridge CPUs and a new chassis. Compatibility to the docking station is maintained we has tested the 15.6-inch model with 2.6-GHz dual-core and full-HD display. The tester is equipped with a matte 15.6-inch display, which dissolves in 1920 by 1080 pixels. It provides excellent image quality, text – in a business-notebook very important – is very easy to read. Vertically and horizontally displays the screen but a significant viewing angle dependence.

Compared to the previous generation of Intel Core i5 CPUs, the 2nd Generation Core i5 provides a significant boost in performance for advanced tasks such as media encoding and decoding, and even 3D gaming. The CPU has a Turbo Boost frequency that can hit a maximum of 3.3GHz.

Dell Latitude E6220 is boasts Intel Core i7, i5, i3, Core 2 Duo, or Celeron processor. Dell Latitude E6220 has a 15.6” FHD or HD display with Intel® HD Graphics 3000, Mobile Intel® HM65 Express Chipset, 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet, Bluetooth® 3.0, one HDMI port, one VGA port, one Docking Connector port, four USB 2.0 ports (one USB/eSATA combo port), optional HD video webcam, and a 4-cell, 6-cell, 9-cell Dell NHXVW battery.

The Dell Latitude E6220 provides a cost-efficient, powerful, mobile solution for both school's staff and students. The ICT Service recommends this device as an all-round laptop for school use. For optional extras commonly purchased with this device please look below in the "suggestions" section. Take your office wherever you go with the redesigned Dell Latitude E6220. This laptop is built for the mobile business class with the durability, productivity, security and easy manageability you've come to expect from the Latitude E-Family laptops.

A 500GB, 7200rpm hard drive was included, although you can also opt for an encrypted 320GB HDD, or 256GB solid state drive if the impulse takes you. Dell Latitude E6220 battery options are good, offering four (40Whr), six (60Whr) and nine (97Whr) cell options. While most batteries are covered by a one-year warranty, Dell offers a nine-cell (87Whr) option that is covered for three years.

Performance was outstanding, with 3DMark06 and PCMark05 returning tons of 3482 and 7183 respectively. Even if that is a mid-level machine, it must eat through most business workloads thrown at it. Our study sample was provided with the 97Whr, 9-cell battery, and so lasted a heck of a long time. With all power-saving features switched off, screen brightness and volume set to maximum and an XviD file played back in fullscreen, the battery held out for 3 hours and Fifty Five minutes, admirable for a netbook of that power and size. Less difficult objectives will taxation the Dell NHXVW battery less, and obviously lower capacity batteries will proffer less time.

Fundamentally, what you are finding in the Latitude E6220 can be a laptop computer that’s super-quick and valuable for nearly any productiveness endeavour imaginable in an workplace setting. It possesses a great array of aged and new connectivity, it has a backlit keyboard as well as a wonderful Complete Hd display screen, and we think that any companies that deploy it will get many years of utilization of it.

Dell’s new Latitude E6220 is a solid business option that packs in a giant quantity of value. The organization is obviously Dell Latitude E6220 adapter to the consumerisation of the business space by incorporating features for example an HDMI port and single 3.5mm headphone/microphone jack, however still supplies the support organizations need.

On the front sits a 6-in-1 memory card reader plus headphone and microphone jacks. Lastly, on the right is a DVD SuperMulti Drive.

Video callers will appreciate the HD webcam on the ProBook 4530s, which is capable of 720p video. Though it’s not Skype HD-certified–video maxed out at 640 x 480–callers said we looked sharp on their end. We also recorded 720p video using the ArcSoft Webcam Companion software, and it looked crisp and smooth during playback.

The ProBook 4530s lacks some of the advanced durability enhancements of its corporate sibling, the HP EliteBook 8460p, such as a rubber ring around the screen and a magnesium base. It does, however, feature a similar spill-resistant keyboard, number pad, and bottom case drain.

Outfitted with a 2.3-GHz Intel Core i5-2410M processor and 4GB of RAM, the HP ProBook 4530s offers solid performance. Its PCMark Vantage score of 6,220 is almost 800 points above the mainstream category average. However, the similarly configured Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E420s (2.3-GHz Intel Core i5-2410M, 4GB of RAM) squeezed past the ProBook 4530s, notching 6,290.

The design of HP Probook 4530s is quite sleek with a brushed-aluminum finish in metallic gray color. A spill-resistant isle-style keyboard will add more comfort for the users. Go grab it now if you in need of good quality affordable business laptop.

With a wide rectangular frame that sits high on rubber nubs, the ProBook 4530s weighs 5.6 pounds and measures 14.8 x 10.1 x 1.1 inches. Slightly heavier than the Toshiba Tecra R850 (5.4 pounds), it isn’t easy to carry on long trips, but transporting it from room to room won’t prove difficult.

The ProBook is housed in a brushed-aluminum finish in metallic gray color. The keyboard is spill-resistant. This notebook weighs 5 pounds and has a standard 6-cell Dell Y5XF9 battery. The operating system of this notebook is Windows 7. What is good about this notebook is that it has HP QuickWeb instant-on OS for quick access to the Internet, without Windows boot up.

The HP PowerBook 4530s' six-cell battery lasted 4 hours and 53 minutes on the HP ProBook 4530s battery test (web surfing via Wi-Fi). While that's a half hour longer than what we see from mainstream machines, the Tecra R850 (6:34) and the ThinkPad Edge E420s (6:41) both lasted much longer. To be fair, the latter notebook is a 14-inch system. An extended nine-cell battery for the 4530s costs $59.

For connectivity and data, the 4530s notebook is offer three USB 2.0 ports, USB 3.0 port for faster tarnsfer than USB 2.0, an ExpressCard slot, VGA connectors, microphone in headphone/line-out, optional Bluetooth, 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet LAN and mobile broadband. The screen size of HP ProBook 4530s adapter, is 15.6 inches with a resolution of 1366x 768 pixel LED-backlight. Processors used from 2:10 i3-2310M GHz, up to 2GHz Core i7-2630QM quad-core processors.

Equipped with a large 500GB hard drive spinning at a quick 7,200 rpm, the ProBook 4530s managed to fire up Windows 7 Professional in 58 seconds, 8 seconds faster than the average 15-inch notebook. Duplicating a 5GB of folder of mixed multimedia files took 3 minutes and 2 seconds, translating to a high data rate of 38 MBps, well above the category average of 26.3 Mbps.

The HP ProBook 4530s hits the sweet spot. At $729, it offers a durable and sleek brushed-aluminum design, solid security, and Core i5 power for a price that’s right. We’re not fans of the small arrow keys, and those who want discrete graphics will have to pay more. Overall, though, business users looking for a stylish but seriously powerful laptop need look no further.

Dell Latitude E5420 Overview

The Dell Latitude E5420 is a business class notebook from Dell designed for business users that need a durable notebook, but will mainly use the device at the office and around town. The Latitude E5420 does include a tri-metal case, but isn’t as rugged as the Latitude E6420, which may be a better choice for users that need more durability while on the road.
The Latitude E5420 Essential from the business line of Dell notebooks certainly lives up to its name. The 14 inch device is a solid notebook with matte high-quality surfaces, and top-notch input devices. Fingers fly across the touchpad and keys with ease and accuracy. Meanwhile users will easily forget that there is only a Core i3-2310M processor under the hood. Although this doesn't quite deliver the same performance of the newer Sandy Bridge Core i5 CPUs with Turbo-Boost 2.0.

Performance is good: Equipped with an Intel Core i5-2520M running at 2.5GHz, 4GHz of DDR3 RAM, Intel HD integrated graphics, and the 64-bit version of Windows 7 Professional, our test model earned a respectable score of 123 on WorldBench 6. That's in the ballpark for the top-ranked notebooks on our all-purpose laptops chart--and the E5420's gaming scores (compared with other laptops using integrated graphics) were pretty good too--but many of those competitors cost less

The redesigned Dell Latitude E5420 adapter is ideal for professionals looking for a budget-friendly blend of mobility and at-your-desk computing. Ready for whatever your work might dish out, this highly durable laptop is stylishly armored top to bottom with a hard-wearing Tri-MetalTM design, including an anodized brushed aluminum display back, reinforced steel hinges, a magnesium alloy internal frame and zinc alloy latches. The Latitude E5420 is also equipped with a protective LCD seal, 360-degree bumper for added screen protection and a spill-resistant keyboard that can outlast the bumps and spills of everyday work.

Dell Latitude E5420 is designed for professionals who want to work hourly in office and have no time to for charging, its powerful Dell LATITUDE E5420 battery gives up to 10 hours of battery timing. This notebook comprises of 14 inch HD WLED display screen, Intel core processor family, DDR3 Ram, Sata Hard driver, webcam with mic, LAN and wifi connections, Bluetooth, memory card reader, high speed USB ports, optical drive, its is purely light weight notebook round about 2kg can be taken easily with its hand bang.

The E5420 has several other features that should love this corporate IT buyers and their components. It has both a joystick and a touchpad (no need to fight this war Ergonomic a broad base of users), although none of the input devices is the best I've been, the two are certainly adequate. The keyboard has keys that are nicely sculpted fun to use, the backlight turns on when a button is pressed and turns off after a period of inactivity to conserve Dell M5Y0X battery power.

As good as this machine normally is, today’s deal of the day price makes even better. For a limited time you will be able to get this laptop for $320 Off the original price. The cheapest configurations can be had for $569-$599 (from an original price of $889), and come with a Core i3/i5. If you want more power, you can get opt for the Core i7 for $749 (from an original price of $1069).

Dell also speaks of current Intel Sandy Bridge processors from the i3, i5 and i7 range for the E5520 and E5420. vPro CPUs are also are to be put up for option. Interesting: Unlike the E6x20 models, quad core models aren't listed here. You'll have to be content with the basic configuration by way of the incorporated Intel HD Graphics 3000 for graphics performance. The available Nvidia NVS 4200M offered for the E6x20 notebooks, which works together with the HD 3000 via Optimus, apparently won't be offered for the lower-priced models.

The E5420's built-in speakers produce surprisingly robust audio, and although our test unit lacked a webcam you can opt to configure the machine with one. However, while the laptop does have a built-in microphone it offers no option to plug in separate headphone and microphone jacks, you get only a combined audio-mic port.

What really sets the Dell Latitude E5420 apart is its 9.5-hour Dell Latitude E5420 battery life, which is two to three times greater than that of comparable models. If you're going places where power outlets aren't always available, the E5420 would certainly be an appealing option for its longevity alone.

Doing business today means working anytime, anywhere. You need a laptop to keep up with your work style. Latitude E-Family laptops combine world-class design with durability to perform, wherever business takes you.

Silvery hardware audio-control buttons next to the keyboard let you quickly adjust volume or mute the sound entirely. Other welcome amenities include an external on-off hardware button for Wi-Fi (both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz flavors of 802.11n, yay!); Smart Card and SD Card slots; and even a FireWire port, presumably to support legacy storage devices since FireWire has fallen out of favor in the consumer market.

Business notebooks are subjected to a requirement for good security features. While the bigger organisations usually have their own security solutions, smaller establishments are usually happy to have security features and software included with a notebook. Worth mentioning in this respect is the Dell Data Protection Tool, and the backup and restore manager.

The Dell Latitude E5420 may not have the same sleek lines and rugged features as the E6320 or E6420, but an incredibly solid build quality, good traditional keyboard, antiglare screen and low starting prices combine to offer a reliable business notebook that won’t break the bank. The ability to work with other Latitude E Family docks and batteries is a big plus, and hopefully your IT guy will spring for a dock and a set of external speakers for your desk.
